Using merge tags on Airbnb

Overview

Using merge tags on Airbnb can be an amazing tool and vital to the success of your guest messaging. They are simply placeholders for important information within a reservation that can be automatically populated into a message for each unique reservation. This makes your messages more personalized and can help you build a relationship with your guests, increase their trust in you, and ultimately increase the guest experience. Don’t worry, they are actually really simple.

Common tags

Some tags are more useful for hosts with multiple listings, but they are still important for single listings. The most common merge tags are listed below.

  • First and last names,
  • Reservation dates
  • Number of nights in a reservation
  • Listing city
  • Listing guidebook

Merge tags are the backbone of using quick replies and scheduled messages. Check out my other hosting articles if you haven’t set those up yet! The screenshot below shows the guest’s first name merge tag inserted into the scheduled welcome message. That message automatically sends to 15 listings and the guest’s first name is populated into the message so I don’t have to edit it manually every time.

Single listings

Of all the available tags, first-name is the most useful merge tag for a host with one listing. This allows you to send a scheduled welcome message with the guest’s name without typing it out. Personalization is vital in establishing a rapport with the guest, so use this merge tag every time.

Multiple listings

Hosts with multiple listings can use merge tags such as listing city, guidebook, and unique wifi info, that pre-populates into each unique message. If you have listings in two different cities, you can use one message for both that will adjust the information accordingly.

Recap

Make sure you’re using merge tags on Airbnb! They will save a ton of time and allow you to use scheduled messages more effectively during the communication lifecycle with your guests. Don’t forget to use them when asking your guest for a review at the end of their stay. Check out my review request template for a sure way to increase your review frequency.
